Kesinee Walayakorn makes a quick stopover at at the Royal Elephant Museum prior to tour of Vimanmek Mansion
The Royal Elephant National Museum (Chang Ton Museum) is a great way to start the day off at a slow pace rather than force-feeding yourself with a history lesson on Thailand. That can wait - after all, the breathtaking Vimanmek Mansion is literally fifty steps away. Start with the Royal Elephant Museum to learn more about the elephant, the national animal, and its role in the Siamese court.
Housed in two small Thai building built during the reign of King Rama V and King Rama VI, they were originally stables used to keep Royal elephants.
Ancient elephant-related artifacts are on display including tusks of white elephants, even preserved skin, ceremonial items made from parts of white elephants and equipment used to capture them from the wild.
The second building houses a model of the white elephant present to King Rama VII as well as illustrations of ceremonies held to confer Royal status to a white elephant. All in all, you will be able to enjoy a stroll at this museum in just twenty minutes.
