Phuket is a town steeped in as much in historical charm as it is in its coastal brilliance. Once an important trading post on the eastern shore of the Bay of Bengal, Phuket, then known as Thalang (pronounced Ta-laang), attracted a large number of Portugese, Dutch, French and British explorers and traders during the 19th century tin rush.

The Hokkien Chinese immigrants played an important role in the industrial boom as they were the ones employed to do much of the mining. Later amassing their riches, they became key players in building what is now the city’s old quarter made up of Sino-Portugese shophouses and colonial mansions that still exist today.

It goes without saying that Phuket is blessed with heavenly beaches that have won praise from sun worshippers from all over the world. Patong, Kata, Karon and Kamala are the most popular beaches, Patong possibly being the least attractive for its abundance of cheap beer bars but it’s the place to visit for a glimpse of Phuket’s nightlife. Kamala Beach is on the north of Patong and offers a more relaxed and lazy pace making it very popular with long-term visitors. For those seeking beach perfection, nearby Karon Beach is probably your best bet with its long stretch of white sand conducive for sunbathing and water sports activities.
