Thailand Travel Information - Chiang Rai

Thailand's northernmost province is blessed with acres of mountains and winding rivers that make it the holiday destination of choice for nature lovers.
It's hard to visit Chiang Mai and not be tempted by the magical allure Chiang Rai seems to promise. After all, both were part of the ancient Lanna Kingdom (1262 - 1558 A.D.) before briefly becoming a Burmese colony, and both boast a wealth of natural beauty that’s synonymous with the northern region.

Founded by King Mengrai in 1262, Chiang Rai, like its sister province Chiang Mai, boasts distinctive vestiges of Burmese influence as can be seen in its majestic temples. But perhaps more associated to its name than anything is its abundance in natural wealth that's earned its name as --inspired holiday destination it has become.

The northern part of the province is the Golden Triangle, a globally renowned area in which the borders of Thailand, Laos and Burma (also known as Myanmar), converge. This area was once considered as unsafe due to drug trafficking activities that went on across the borders. These days, tourists roam freely to explore the area's hilltribe villages and admire their rich local handicraft.
