Thailand Travel Information - Ayutthaya

Thailand's ancient capital draws in the crowds with its glorious temples and culinary gems
Founded in 1350 by King U-Thong, Ayutthaya was Siam's capital for 417 years before it was ransacked by the Burmese army in 1767. The Ayutthaya era came under the rule of 33 Kings but there were only two distinctive rulers - King Naresuan the Great who freed Ayutthaya from the first Burmese occupation in the mid 16th century, and King Narai the Great whose efforts to boost diplomatic relations with France brought about the golden age of trade and culture to the Kingdom.

There is every reason to explore this ancient city and UNESCO World Heritage site, from the city's walls and majestic pagodas to the magnificent temples and museums, it's a cultural eye-opener and testament to Siamese, Khmer and Sri Lankan architecture par excellence.

Located 72 km from Bangkok, Ayutthaya makes the ideal day trip for visiting the ancient ruins of Ayutthaya Historical Park, including Chai Wattanaram and Yai Chai Mongkol temple, Ratchaburana and Phra Sri Sanpet temples to name but a few. (NB. "wat" in Thai means temple)
